Europe Against The European

Of course not everyone understood the elections in that way. But a substantial number of the electorate did so, and for this reason cast their vote in order to register, not what they felt about this or that domestic policy, but what they felt about the European Union. This was transparently obvious in the case of Britain and France, in both of which countries the vote was won by parties explicitly campaigning for national sovereignty.
